This basic type of escape compass was issued as part of the escape and evasion kits. Together with escape maps, a hacksaw blade and phrase cards, they were packed in a rubberized canvas map pouch. Soldiers called this the “asshole compass” because it was so tiny, you could hide it anywhere.
