Memorial Day at Flanders Fields American Cemetery
This past Sunday, my son and I visited our adopted grave at the Flanders Fields American Cemetery in Waregem, Belgium. This was a very special day for us. It was sunny and there were a lot more people than I had expected. The largest crowd since 20 years, I’m told. No doubt that President Obama’s visit of the cemetery and the recent start of the adopt-a-grave campaign had something to do with this. I am now trying to find out more about ‘our’ soldier, Pvt. James V. Schairer. I’ll try and make a page on this site about what I’ve already found out so far.
I’ve already found out that he was part of the 147th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, U.S. Army. He entered the service from Ohio and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
